Elsevier – an analytics and information company headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands is counted
among the world’s top providers of scientific, technical and medical information. It is a part of the RELX
Group, known until 2015 as Reed Elsevier. Its products include journals such as The Lancet and Cell, the
Science Direct collection of electronic journals, the Trends and Current Opinion series of journals, the online
citation database Scopus, and the ClinicalKey solution for clinicians.

The Elsevier website describes SCOPUS as largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed
literature: scientific journals, books and conference proceedings. Delivering a comprehensive overview
of the world’s research output in the fields of science, technology, medicine, social sciences, and arts and
humanities, Scopus features smart tools to track, analyse and visualise research.

Scopus covers nearly 36,377 titles (22,794 active titles and 13,583 Inactive titles) from approximately 11,678
publishers, of which 34,346 are peer-reviewed journals. According to various sources, Scopus provides a
higher citation count than ISI, both in the Sciences, the Social Sciences and Humanities. Scopus appears
to have a broader journal coverage for the Social Sciences and Humanities than ISI and hence provides a
fairer comparison. Evaluating ease of use and coverage of Scopus and the Web of Science (WOS), a 2006
study concluded that “Scopus is easy to navigate, even for the novice user.
